Understanding shadows and translating them into stylized shading

What do you want to get out of this project?

💡

Knowledge of three-dimensional forms and the physics of light, a deeper understanding of shading techniques, and practice with pushing contrast in an illustration

where did the skills go? we are taking skills out of the idea generation process, in an attempt to make projects more career-focused. If you want to get leveled-up for a project, share it with the appropriate guide or faculty member for feedback upon completion.

Guiding Question

Turn your idea above into a guiding question.

❓

How can I indicate and emphasize shadows to convey a three-dimensional form?

Exploration

Use this space to take notes, keep track of your sources, or conversations you have with people about this project.

I used the website line-of-action.com to generate images to use for my shading studies.

Originally, I wanted to produce a series of studies and sketches, and then a larger finished illustration, but I decided to drop the larger illustration and practice using different shading techniques in my studies instead.

Was your project deep?

Reflection

Reflect on this project cycle by answering the questions below.

The act of reflecting allows you to highlight the accomplishments and applications of your project. (questions courtesy of Powderhouse Studios)

Was your project meaningful?

✨

My project was every useful because it helped me to understand how light and shadow behaves and how to translate this to a drawing. I focused mostly on the human face because of its complexity, but what I learned can be translated to plenty of other applications.

Was your project ambitious?

✨

I already had a strong foundation for shading, but this project showed me where I am using it incorrectly and how I can better utilize it to convey three dimensional ideas in art.

Was your project deep?

✨

My project helped me to internalize rules for lighting and shading; although it wasn’t the purpose for my project, I also reviewed human facial structure. I also attempted a variety of shading techniques and I have already been using what I have learned in my current artworks.
