Digital Portrait #1

Cycle 1/2

Idea Generation

What is this project about?

šŸ’”
I want to create a bunch of digital portraits of my friends looking great in calls! I think a structured and defined goal like this will also help me get in to art again, because I've been wanting to do that for a while.

What do you want to get out of this project?

šŸ’”
I want to revive my enthusiasm for art and have some nice paintings to show for it!

2/10:

I'm currently attempting to define the steps along the way of making a portrait. So far, I've got a couple steps:

  1. create thumbnail sketches and find a tentative color palate
  2. sketch out the major parts of the piece
  3. refine sketch + block colors (no shading or blending)
  4. line art over block colors
  5. shading, blending and complicated coloring
  6. make a background (optional sometimes)
  7. finishing touches

I think my list is fairly accurate, at least that's how I've always done big pieces. Wht's important to me is that I stick to this list, because in the past when I go off the rails I get burnt out very quickly - and that is precisely what I'm trying to avoid with this project.

2/11:

Decided that I'm going to go with a couple select parameters for my portraits. Mostly simple ones: just that they should all be uniform in size, relatively detailed and of people.

2/13-16

Done LOTS of work in the last couple days. I got a very solid sketch done and added all the features I was looking for.

2/24:

I've hit a roadblock, I can't get the anatomy right on a specific eye and its causing me to be pretty close to burnout. I've decided to just ignore that portion of the face and just continue on with the block painting.

3/2:

I worked on line art a bit today and I'm feeling a little better about the whole project in general. I'm definitely not going to get as much done this cycle as I was hoping to get done, but I'm still pretty satisfied with my overall progress. Next month my goal is to finish the piece entirely.
